With a release date of 1st January 2014 the movie American Hustle, with it’s big name cast of Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams tells the story of a con man, Irving Rosenfeld (Bale), along with his seductive British partner, Sydney Prosser (Adams), forced to work for a wild FBI agent, Richie DiMaso (Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey power brokers and mafia. It is not my thing but having my finger on the fashion pulse I am hearing a lot of chatter about the costumes worn by Amy Adams. In short they are going to bring back wrap dresses with a vengeance.
What’s going to happen though, is that women, especially in the UK, are not going to watch this movie. And if they do, they won’t be taking fashion tips from a 1970’s con man film. As I have written many a time, women are turning to the internet and fashion blogger #fbloggers (as well as online magazines) for their fashion advice.
So the US will be ahead of the UK until the UK magazines take a lead from the movie, write about the wrap dress fashion return and THEN we will see the big fashion houses famed for the style such as Diane Von Furstenberg (who incidentally supplied the dresses for the film) and Oscar De La Renta bringing out their versions before the UK high street stores (I am looking at you Primark) create their more affordable dresses.
Saying all this, you can get ahead of the curve, dear readers, by shopping now for the dresses of the future, and here is a great selection to choose from.
The first is a seasonal treat, bringing together everything we love at the moment, holiday parties and sequins. Made by Warehouse and available from our friends at ASOS for £100. And who can argue with DVF? If I think of wrap dresses I think DVF. Here is the Jeanne Two dress for £290 at Boutique1 or £300 at Shopstyle.
And then, for a bit of a print, we have 30% off the Harlem dress at Foreverunique now £100 before going very high end (£2000+) again with Oscar De La Renta with another printed number available from Net-a-Porter.
And finally I recommend the ISSA Wrap dress made popular by the adorable Kate Middleton. Both Middleton sisters wore this (Pippa red and Kate Blue), and it sold out at Harvey Nicks despite the £385 price tag.
